About The crisis

As the Syria crisis enters its eleventh year, civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict with an estimated 13.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Around half of the population has been forced from their homes, and many people have been displaced multiple times. Children and youth comprise more than half of the displaced, as well as half of those in need of humanitarian to ensure that humanitarian needs are met without gaps or duplication, OCHA is responsible for timely information by consolidating and publishing information across the spectrum of humanitarian response, in various forms and formats. Using data modelling techniques, the OCHA Syria interactive dashboards enable intuitive visualization of 4Ws data (presence and response): who does what, where, and when, as well as provides up-to-date data on all inter-agency operations from inside Syria.

The OCHA Syria Country Office operates from Damascus with sub-offices in Aleppo, Homs and Quamishli. Through expanded field presence, OCHA Syria facilitates outreach and coordination with humanitarian partners and other stakeholders across the country including Aleppo, Al-Hasakeh, Damascus, Dara’a, Hama, Homs, Idleb, Lattakia, Rural Damascus and Tartous to enable timely, effective and principled response to assessed needs and increased access. OCHA supports the Syria coordination structures including eight sectors and two clusters, sub-sectors, inter-sector coordination mechanism and the Syria Humanitarian Country Team under the leadership of the Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria. Striving to respond to the needs of those most affected in the most under-served areas, OCHA coordinates cross-line inter-agency access to hard-to-reach areas as well as other areas located across conflict lines. In addition, OCHA carries out access monitoring and analysis in support of operations and advocates on behalf of humanitarian actors both locally and globally. OCHA also works with donors to ensure sufficient and principled funding for humanitarian response in Syria in line with the strategic, thematic and geographical priorities of the Humanitarian Response Plan.

OCHA coordinates effective and principled humanitarian action, advocates the rights of people in need, promotes preparedness and prevention and facilitates sustainable solutions. OCHA continues to invest in digitizing its data and information management tools and reports.

The 4Ws Response dashboard provides specialized information which can be used to help responders ask more informed questions, in addition to feeding into analysis of a response, and identify areas of overlap/gap such as need versus response and need versus funding analysis.
